5 Steps to Fool-Proofing Your New Year's Resolutions

This post first appeared: January 2020; Last updated: January 2021

As everyone knows, January is the time that we all set out to make this new year the best one yet, & we do that by creating New Year’s Resolutions!

But, as we moved further way from January 1 & closer to Blue Monday (3rd Monday of January when the majority of all resolutions are abandoned), we need to take a moment to remember WHY we set these goals/resolutions/intentions in the first place!

So seriously, pause reading this post & think about why you set your goals in the first place…

What did you (or do you) want to achieve this year?

WHY do you want to achieve that goals?

Okay, now that you’ve reflected, write down your goal(s) & the why behind each goal!

Did you know that if you simply write down your goal(s), you increase your chances at success by more than 70%, when compared to just thinking about them!

That’s insane!!

Alright, so now your goals are written down and you’re ready to really rock this year!

Let’s check out the 5 steps you can take to make this year, the year you CRUSH your ALL your goals!

Step One:

Start with the End in Mind

First things first - you’ve got to create the goal!!

See, step one, already done✅

But in all seriousness, usually a goal is an end result that you are looking to achieve, so we need to start with the end in mind.

Example:

→I want to lose 12 pounds

Step Two:

Work Backwards

Next, you need to work backwards.

By working backwards, you can plan out the steps you need to take in order to get from Point A (where you currently are) to Point B (your end goal).

Example:

→Current weight = 150 pounds, goal weight = 138 pounds

Step Three:

Break it Down

Break your goal down into more manageable, smaller goals.

These smaller goals will not only help you get to your larger goal, but they will help you

(1) track your progress

(2) become fun celebrations along the way

(3) are less daunting then your larger, year long goal!

Try breaking your goal down into monthly or bi-monthly goals!

Example:

→Lose 12 pounds in one year becomes lose 1 pound a month, for 12 months

Step Four:

Create an Action Plan

Write out the steps that you need to take to reach your first mini goal.

Be honest & real with yourself.

Make sure you set realistic expectations (see step 5 below) for yourself.

What can you do every day to bring yourself one step closer to your goal?

Don’t forget to do this for ALL your mini goals!

Example:

→To lose 1 pound/month, I will walk 30 minutes/day, 4 days/week & I will fill half of my plate with vegetables for breakfast & dinner

Step Five:

Execute, Evaluation, Achieve!

You can have the world’s best action plan, but it isn’t going to get you anywhere without ACTION, so make sure you execute your action plan to the best of your ability!

Once you get going, don’t forget to evaluate how your plan is going!

Are you able to stick to it?

Is it realistic for your lifestyle?

If not, change up your action plan to fit your needs.

**You may find yourself evaluating and changing up your action plan as the year goes on, and that’s 100% okay! In fact, you most likely will need to change your action plan as the year progresses and your life changes (i.e. getting a new job, working from home, etc)

After you execute and evaluate how your doing, there’s nothing left to do but to continuing executing your plan until you reach your goal!

Example:

→I'm having a hard time walking 4 days/week, therefore, I will commit to 3-30 min walks/week & park my car further away from my office

There you have it!

Five steps that you can apply & fool-proof your resolutions!
